Oh yes, that plate does say ‘1969 – GM’, but the Opel GT really was launched a year earlier in 1968, which means it deserves a little mention here to celebrate its 50th anniversary, now that it is still 2018. So there you go, a Friday Lady Opel GT from the files. We do not know much about the picture other than it was supposedly taken in The Netherlands. Who knows more?
Now. The GT was anything but your average Opel model, but there was a good reason for that. The car was made possible by Georg von Opel, a grand cousin to Opel-founder Adam von Opel, who longed for a serious break-away car from the rather dull model range.
Despite its design resembling that of the C3 Chevrolet Corvette in miniature - another model from the vast GM range, the GT actually shared much of its underpinnings with the humble Opel Kadett. Power came from a base 1.1-liter straight-four engine with 67 hp along with an optional 1.9-liter unit with 102 hp, which wasn't really bad considering the GT only weighed under 850 kgs. We still like it!
