For its second year, 1954, Buick’s Skylark became its own separate series, resulting in a sort of corporate hot rod that was based on the 122-inch wheelbase Special/Century chassis but had the “hot” Roadmaster engine. Yes, Buick called the result a “sports car.” Its bodywork was substantially redesigned, the rear fenders were bobbed and sloped gently downward, and large chrome taillight nacelles were added. A wraparound windshield was shared with other 1954 Buicks, but the wheel cut-outs, which had been enlarged and elongated, with their inner wells painted a contrasting color to the body, were exclusive and unusual.

At $4,355, the Skylark continued the tradition of being the most expensive Buick offering, as it was priced at more than $400 above the priciest Roadmaster. It was also the most exclusive, as only 836 sports cars were produced in 1954.

The Skylark offered here was beautifully restored some years ago in its original hue of Mandarin Red, over the proper “waffled” leather interior as original, and is equipped with a factory Selectronic AM radio, power steering and brakes, EZ Eye tinted glass, Weather Warden heater/defroster, and power windows and four-way seat. Owned in 2016 by Steve Levy of Deerfield, Illinois, it was acquired from him by Ray and Bonnie Kinney for their distinguished collection in early 2019. Invoices are on file for considerable work undertaken over the following two years, including various sorting of the car’s components and rebuilding of the fuel pump. Maintained and upkept since to their high standards, it has occasionally been displayed at significant concours, including the San Marino Motor Classic, as well as driven and enjoyed.

This is a particularly striking and handsome example of what is inarguably one of Buick’s most significant, beautiful post-war models, and the very last of the limited-production Skylarks.
