Mercedes-Benz turned to racing partner AMG in Affalterbach to bolster its position in the rivalry against BMW and its Motorsport division,. Among the first models to emerge with a more sporting edge from this closer collaboration was the boxy and brilliant Geländewagen.
For 1993, in conjunction with AMG, the G-Class had appeared with a V-8 for the first time. The engine returned a respectable 237 horsepower from its 4.97-litre displacement. It is reported that, despite an original forecast to aptly produce 500 cars, just 446 examples were ultimately completed.
Given such a limited production, any 500 GE V8 is a special vehicle. But the car offered here still stands proud. Chassis number 1669 was finished in the “Special Request” shade of Avantgarde Verde, per the Mercedes-Benz data card available to view on file. The tailored presentation was fitting for its first owner, Prince Sultan Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud of Saudi Arabia. The royal requests didn’t stop at the colour, for this car was further specified with a wider track and larger wings to accommodate the AMG light alloy wheels.
Completed on 28 July 1993, the Mercedes-Benz was registered for use on the road in Saudia Arabia in February 1994. To go with the outstanding exterior, the Black and grey leather interior features Burr walnut veneer trim and was appointed with automatic climate control, cruise control, heated front seats, and an electric sunroof.
Since purchased by the consigning owner, the G-Wagen was mechanically recommissioned by the Obsessive Car Workshop in Jeddah in 2025. This included the replacement of the hydraulic brake fluid, fixing an oil leak over the front axle, repairs to the heater core, and replenishment of the automatic climate control. In addition, OCW changed the fuel pump and filter further to recommissioning the differential.
Accompanied by its owner’s guides in their folio and displaying 24,254 kilometres at the time of cataloguing, further to boasting a royal first owner, this exquisitely specified example of the rare 500 GE V8 is sure to attract Mercedes-Benz enthuasists.
