1981 Ferrari 512 BB | The Quail Auction 2026
Chassis No. 38293
Engine No. 00946
As a new challenge emerged from the Raging Bull in the form of the Miura and its revolutionary rear-mounted V12 engine, the Prancing Horse responded with a machine of its own: the BB. Officially standing for Berlinetta Boxer, it is often said, even within Ferrari itself, that the famous initials carried a far less formal inspiration. Legend has it that when Pininfarina's design team first unveiled the car's breathtaking lines, the nickname "BB" was bestowed in tribute to Brigitte Bardot, the celebrated French actress and enduring symbol of beauty, freedom, and the spirit of an era.
The story began in 1971 with the introduction of the 365 GT4 BB. Powered by a mid-mounted 4.4-liter flat-12 engine, its architecture drew directly from Ferrari's Formula One experience, allowing for an exceptionally low profile, dramatic proportions, and commanding road presence.
In 1976, Ferrari unveiled the 512 BB at the Paris Motor Show. Displacement was increased to five liters and fed by four Weber carburetors, producing the same peak power at lower engine speeds while delivering greater torque, improved flexibility, and more effortless performance than its predecessor, rated at 340 horsepower and capable of a top speed of 302 km/h (188 mph).
Originally intended for limited production and ultimately built in just 929 examples, the 512 BB was never officially offered on the American market, Ferrari choosing not to adapt the model to increasingly stringent U.S. environmental and safety regulations. Nevertheless, a number of discerning enthusiasts found ways to acquire these coveted machines.
A final-year production example, chassis number 38293 was delivered new through French Ferrari importer Charles Pozzi to its first owner in Connecticut on 26 October 1981, according to its warranty card and owner's service book. Imported to the U.S. in effect from new it was modified to comply with U.S. federal requirements and still retains its Ferrari Berlinetta Boxer importer plaque, stating: "This vehicle conforms to all applicable Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards...".
Reportedly stored within a private collection for many years, the 512 BB benefited from a comprehensive engine-out service performed by Exclusive Motorcars of Arizona in April 2025 at 10,241 miles on the odometer, totaling more than $15,000. The extensive work included replacement of the timing belts, water pump, and the majority of gaskets and seals, together with fresh fluids, carburetor tuning, and related maintenance, all supported by detailed invoices on file.
Presented in the timeless combination of Rosso Corsa over black leather with Daytona-style seats and riding on Cromodora wheels, this 512 BB displayed just 10,264 miles on the odometer, believed to be original, at the time of cataloging and is accompanied by its original factory literature, Ferrari attaché-style tool kit, jack in the leather tool roll, and matching spare wheel. A compelling reminder of Ferrari's timeless appeal among enthusiasts when acquiring one in the United States often demanded determination and perseverance, this rare and collectible 512 BB now awaits its next caretaker at the fall of the gavel.
