A product of BRABUS' formative decades under founder Bodo Buschmann, this R129 sits at the intersection of Stuttgart engineering excellence and Bottrop's emerging performance philosophy. Conceived during a period when BRABUS was rapidly establishing itself as a definitive interpreter of Mercedes-Benz luxury and performance models, the R129 provided an ideal foundation for measured yet meaningful enhancement, blending grand touring refinement with heightened mechanical authority.

It was therefore only natural that BRABUS, already renowned for extracting extraordinary performance and exclusivity from Mercedes-Benz flagship models, would turn its attention to the 500 SL. Building upon the robust architecture of the M119 V8, BRABUS executed its now-iconic 6.0-liter enlargement, distinguished by its red valve covers and comprehensive upgrades to displacement, fueling, and breathing. Output rose to approximately 402 horsepower, a figure achieved in a highly limited production run of around 45 conversions.

Among them is this early-production R129, delivered new in Germany in the summer of 1990 and finished in classic Blue-Black Metallic over Anthracite leather. Factory-equipped with Mercedes-Benz's ASR (Acceleration Slip Regulation) system, it was also ordered with desirable comfort features such as air conditioning, heated front seats, and headlamp wipers and washers

Remaining in Germany throughout most of its life, the car is accompanied by former German registration documents, as well as a valid German technical inspection issued in 2018 with 232,320 kilometers recorded on the odometer. In 2023, it was imported to Florida and subsequently joined the collection in which it resides today, showing 243,157 kilometers or approximately 151,091 miles at the time of cataloguing.

Fitted with three-spoke Brabus Monoblock II "blade" wheels, the car is features additional Brabus parts that include the 300 km/h speedometer, front bumper, intake, and exhaust. Equally at home on the German autobahn or a coastal boulevard, the R129 remains one of the most accomplished Mercedes-Benz convertibles ever built, especially this German-market example with its desirable Brabus upgrades.
