Following the one-off Miura Roadster created by Bertone in 1968, Lamborghini produced only a handful of Targa-bodied models before unveiling the Diablo VT Roadster. Its arrival marked the return of a true open V12 Lamborghini after nearly three decades.



Conceived with the ambition of creating the fastest production car in the world, the Diablo was penned by Marcello Gandini and became one of the defining supercar shapes of the 1990s. Originally introduced in rear-wheel-drive form, it reached a new level of sophistication with the arrival of the four-wheel-drive Viscous Traction (VT) in 1993, the first Lamborghini V12 to feature permanent all-wheel drive.



The Diablo VT Roadster perfectly embodied Lamborghini's ability to preserve its traditions of hand-built craftsmanship and exclusivity while embracing innovative engineering. Built around a tubular steel chassis clothed in aluminum bodywork and carbon-fiber components, the latter used for the first time on a production Lamborghini, it introduced an ingenious removable hardtop and an all-new hydraulic front-axle lifting system, significantly improving everyday usability without compromising its dramatic presence.



At its heart lay a magnificent 5.7-liter naturally aspirated V12, producing 485 horsepower and 428 lb-ft of torque. Capable of accelerating from 0 to 60 mph in approximately 4.5 seconds and reaching a verified top speed of 209 mph at the Nardò proving ground, the Diablo ranked among the fastest production automobiles of its era.



Today, the Diablo stands as one of the defining automotive icons of the 1990s. Its unmistakable silhouette, dramatic proportions, theatrical scissor doors, and fearless approach to color-from understated metallic finishes to dazzling, vibrant hues-perfectly captured the exuberance of the decade. Few automobiles embody the spirit of the 1990s so completely while remaining as visually arresting and desirable today.



Completed at Sant'Agata on 15 May 1997, this exemplary U.S.-market Diablo VT Roadster was delivered new in New York State in the summer of 1998. Finished in striking Blu Chiaro over a Beige leather interior and complemented by stunning OZ wheels, it perfectly embodies the dramatic and vibrant character of Lamborghini's iconic 1990s supercar.



In addition to delivering the breathtaking performance described above, this Diablo VT Roadster, equipped with Lamborghini's gated five-speed transmission, combines supercar capability with genuine grand touring comfort. Its well-appointed interior features adjustable leather seats, automatic climate control, power windows and mirrors, a tilt-adjustable leather-wrapped steering wheel, a bespoke Alpine audio system, central locking, concealed storage compartments, and numerous thoughtful amenities that make it equally suited to long-distance touring and spirited driving.



Like all Diablos, this U.S.-market example is fitted with a kilometer odometer and a speedometer calibrated in miles per hour. However, few Diablos have covered as few kilometers as this one, which displayed just 31,557 kilometers (19,608 miles) at the time of cataloging, supported by regular mileage entries recorded throughout the CARFAX Vehicle History Report.



Last year, the car benefited from an important service and maintenance program, at 31,315 kilometers, during which its clutch was notably replaced by Euroquipe of Illinois, a specialist in European automotive excellence. Its accompanying clean CARFAX Vehicle History Report, available for consultation, also records a previous service performed by Lamborghini Paramus, New Jersey, at 30,290 kilometers.
