Like Halloween, the whole Thanksgiving thing seems a bit out of place for us Europeans. After all it celebrates the pilgrims coming to America, doesn’t it? And it celebrates it with one thing in particular: food. Lots of food - as reminders that we can be thankful for lots of things. But there’s another way to commemorate the great American holiday that is becoming a tradition – Thanksgiving movies, and they will be aired today throughout the US.
So which is the best of them with some great classic car action in it? Yes, Planes, Trains & Automobiles ticks most of the boxes –it’s a roadmovie set in Thanksgiving atmospheres, it’s totally silly and hilariously stupid. But the star car is a 1986 Chrysler LeBaron Town & Country Convertible – and we’re still not sure about that one. No, how about Alice’s Restaurant? A 1969 Thanksgiving Classic, based on the great Arlo Guthrie song, which spawns one very rare Cadillac Eureka flower car as a centre piece of motoring.
But hang on, best of them could be ‘Home for the Holidays’. With a lovely 1970 Pontiac GTO prominently featured in the movie, including some smoking scenes with Robert Downey Junior behind the wheel. Find the full movie here if you are longing for some old fashioned Thanksgiving sentiments – whether you are in America or not. No thanks, it's Thanksgiving.
