About Tough to crack car puzzle #177: HWM Jaguar GT Coupe

Not too many of you seemed to know about last week’s mystery motor? We didn’t receive too many answers, but then that may also have had to do with ongoing issues with the website. We are doing our very best to fix all of this, but you’ll have to have a little more patience!

Anyway: the beautiful car shown to you was not a special-bodied Alfa 6C 3000, nor a modified AC Aceca as some of you suggested. This, ladies and gentlemen, was the 1956 HWM-Jaguar GT Coupe. HWM (Hersham and Walton Motors) had been building racers since the late 1940s and this car was HMW-boss George Abecassis personal car. Several of you knew it, Henk Visscher’s answer was trhe most complete one. We fully reproduce it here: “Between 1946 and 1956, Hersham and Walton Motors (HWM), Walton-on-Thames, built Formula-2 and sports cars, which regularly competed in British and international races. Firm owners, George Abecassis and John Heath, were successful racing participants. Initially, cars were Alta-powered, but in 1953 HWM switched to Jaguar engines. Bodywork was provided by FLM Panelcraft Ltd., Battersea, London. Car production ceased following the fatal racing accident of John Heath. The last car produced in 1956 was the pictured spaced-framed HWM-Jaguar GT coupé, designed by Abecassis and Frank Feeley, stylist of Aston Martin. Owned by Wolfgang Schnedler, the car is still in perfect condition.”

That’s it, although we are not totally sure about the body being fabricated by Panelcraft. It could also have been Williams & Pritchard’s, as another reader suggested. However, it’s good to know the car is still going strong. Click here and scroll down to see it’s back in a recent action shot.
