Anglo-American alliances

An American collection of AC’s that will go under the hammer is the surprise of RM’s Hershey auction of next month. In the first place because they are not the well-known Shelbys and Cobras the Americans are so fond of. John Moir’s AC collection counts five post-war Brits with the AC badge of the less obvious kind. In the first place there is an AC 2-Litre (above) which was bought new by the good man in 1950. It was this AC that triggered Moir to wheel and deal many more ACs – dozens more of them, reputedly.

Of the few cars he kept, a 1956 AC Petite is another ultra-rare survivor. It’s all original with its 8bhp, 350 cc Villiers two-stroke single-cylinder engine although the roof has been damaged. Or how about an AC Invacar of 1975? Yes, another three-wheeler, built with the disabled in mind, and now with 5bhp, 500cc engine and independent rear suspension. Moir’s 1958 Ace with factory hardtop will surely create more of a stir with bidders, but remember its not half as rare. Prettiest of them all has to be the 1958 Aceca that Moir owned for decades. Like the Ace it comes with its original two-litre Bristol power and beautiful patina. Now, which would you like most?
