Fighting his tears between the few lines he sent, Rick Nicolaas tells about the GM decision to stop Holden production in Australia in 2017. So where are they made in the future? In China, like most new Model T parts?
"This car brand is a true Aussie icon. This 1963 Holden stationwagon I saw in Rockingham south of Perth.
The car was found after years in a paddock and restored. It had only 3 owners from new."
Rick is not a writer, not a man of many words, but he means what he says. Holden & Australia are like brother and sister under one roof. By killing the Holden production, GM is killing a piece of Australia. Like Chevy has long been advertised as the Heartbeat of America Holden could have been advertised - and even more rightuously - as the Heartbeat of Australia. The current Holden tagline "Let's go on journey" sounds extra bitter with respect to next year's plans... . If your editor was an Aussie, he would never ever buy a new GM again and hold on to his Holden.
