Forget Santa Claus and Christmas! Today it's December fifth, the day the Dutch celebrate Sinterklaas (or Saint Nicholas), the bishop who travels every year from Spain to Holland to give presents to the children, whether they have been naughty or not. Normally the bishop rides a white horse, but we have also spotted him in more comfortable transport (click main picture, a photo taken from a 1960s Dutch Volkswagen advert).
And why forget Santa Claus? Because he's a corruption of the real Sinterklaas who came to the USA together with the Dutch settlers of Manhattan in 1624!
