Bringing an Opel to GM country sounds bizarre to European ears. In our view the Opel Rekord was a poor man's, dressed down version of the Chevy Belair. Yet stranger things have been done. Former owner Donald Risen reports about cars he owned 50 years ago. (do you have similar stories, be sure to let us know!)
"Here is the picture of the model 1958 Opel Rekord that I purchased on October 17, 1957 and took delivery in Soissons, France after it was displayed in the Paris Auto Show. I had the wheel covers and whitewalls put on in Breda, Holland. I brought the car back to the U.S. in mid-1959 and drove it across the United States with my family. In July, 1962 I traded it in for another car. The 1955 Hillman Husky I bought in 1956 while living in France. I drove it across the Alps at St. Goddard Pass and down through Italy. It was so underpowered that I had to go across the pass in first gear."
