California fires destroy classics

Several classic cars have fallen victim to the fires that rage over California the last couple of days. And among them are some real sad stories. Volvo P1800 owner Steven D. Cox shared before and after photographs (pictures 2 and 3 below) of his beloved sports car on social media and wrote: “This is all that’s left of Jezebel... She was a beauty... but family is safe... FYI: up your insurance.”

Donald Miller did the same after he saw what was left of his Rambler, claimed by the fire (pictures 4 and 5 below). And there were several more people who lost their prized possessions. No surprise perhaps as the fired raged right through Malibu, where many classic car collectors live and have their cars tucked away in their garages.

Saddest story, perhaps, came from Gary Ceverney, who had a collection of over 30 cars, with several unique examples between them. Best known of them all must have been the beautifully streamlined Norman Timbs Special, which is believed to have gone also. Hot Rod magazine had a look at Ceverney’s private collection some years ago and shared the images ‘to keep Ceverney and his family, along with everyone impacted by the fires, in your thoughts'. See the collection in happier days here.

The Shelby Mustang in the main picture got saved. Photographer Ringo HW Chiu said: ““The Mustang is the only property the firefighters saved from the house”.

Considering what you stand to lose, insuring with someone like J. C. Taylor, Grundy , Hagerty or one of the other specialty insurance companies is very short sighted. Their terms are very affordable and their service has proven exceptional.

Certainly so very sad for these losses in California, car collections, homes, and lives. Here in Pennsylvania no sweeping fires, but what amazes me is the number of guys who don't insure or don't have an updated fair value on their historic stuff. One key area of loss are those who don't carry any insurance on the old stuff in barn storage just waiting for the day when and ever after when an old vehicle is undergoing restoration only to burn without insurance when the owner considered having insurance only after the car was done and ready for the road.
