DO NOT REPAINT a 1954 Aston Martin DB 2/4

From your editor's personal collection is this more than 5o year old Matchbox, Lesney No. 53. It suffered less than my other toys, so it only has the nice traces of being played with and carried around from house to house over the last 5 decades. Only an idiot would repaint it in this condition.

Now click the photo to see a life size look-a-like. It is not exactly the same type of Aston Martin, but it came close enough to trigger my memories. It has the same subtle pale green metallic:  like my Matchbox. Now this 1954 Aston Martin DB 2/4 Mulliner has been with one Swiss owner since new. At first glance the car looks tatty or like a sound restoration project. Wrong! We understand the car is in fine fettle throughout. It's just that the owner didn't think that adding new layers of paint would make his car any better or nicer.  Probably worse, as it would lose credibility & authenticity. The outside is showing the car's history. Little spots of rust and lots of smaller scratches, smaller bumps and dents. Isn't that the same kind of damage most of us carry around after some 55 years in this world? This one owner Aston Martin will be on show at the stand of Christoph Grohe at Rétromobile. We wouldn't be surprised if the car is sold already before that time. Let's only hope the new owner has the courage and wisdom not to repaint the car. Let's hope he has the dignity and bravery to show up with his costly sportscar and risk a few raised eyebrows of friends, family and...wife.  The car is unbeatable with its tastefull  battle scars, its 'stains of honour'.  Of course you could paint it as well and forgot all we said, and you would end up with just another concours Aston Martin. What a loss!
