Colani GT honoured at Schloss Dyck

Schloss Dyck’s Classic Day’s, earlier this month, attracted all the usual suspects. Ultra shiny Ferraris and Maseratis, 300SLs and 911s and Silberpfeilen from Audi and Mercedes. All the big German manufacturers were present with impressive stands, too.

Slightly more unusual was a display of Cologne-built Fords to commemorate 50 years of Ford RS cars, a horde of Porsches in Jägermeister Racing livery and a VW Golf with twin GTI engines that tackled Pikes Peak in 1987 (is that too young for you, dear reader?).

But most unusual and in our view coolest by far was a group of ultra low slung VW beetle based kit cars (below), designed by that most uncommon of designers: Luigi Colani. The Colani GT came about in 1964 and hundreds were sold up until 1968, turning tired old Beetles into something far more flashy. It was no coincidence that these cars met up at the German concours – a new book by Alexander Diego Fritz has just been published about the model.
