30 Years ago we had never ever heard of the british hobby of building Specials. Until a friend told me about his hobby to do major alterations on cars in order to make them more like he wanted them. His most ambitious project back then was based on a MkI Triumph Spitfire which he thought lacked some speed and roadholding abilities. So he decided to exchange the cast iron unit for an alloy two litre Alfa Romeo DOHC which added some 100 HP to the Spitfire and was about 20 kilo's lighter at the same time. This engine was asking for a more sturdy gearbox, rear suspension and brakes of course. And we remember that he used those parts from a donor BMW 5-series.... Not sure whatever came from the project but for sure it must have created an interesting driving experience.
Above a Mr. De Bernes is showing off his far from standard machinery: "This V8 engined MG Magnette is quite well-known and aroused out of a heap of rust. The second car was built by myself and has a 6 cylinder engine and an all aluminium body. My motto is 'Assume the difference in motoring' and the pleasure of driving in your own creation is high on the list."
