Fresh petrol at sixties prices?

While we were wondering about the grand possibilities of this place in Auburn, Indiana, last week, somebody else had come up with a very similar idea in southern Germany. There, on the B28 just outside Kniebis, a retro petrol station opened its doors. Possibly the first in Europe. Until recently, this was an Avia pump like many others, but proprietor Thomas Zink found the time was ripe for a big change. Together with an artist named Christoph Hodgson he completely revamped the place to turn it into a step back in time. Zink: “You can see lots of classic cars and motor bikes on this road and they will see this filling station as a new highlight that fits perfectly in.” Zink not only overhauled his pumps, he decorated the place with 1960s paraphernalia and turned the old car wash into a retro showroom with classics. An appropriate clerk in period dress serves you when necessary, whether you drive Chitty-Chitty Bang-Bang or a brand new BMW. “This is going to become a cult classic”, he added. More photographs here.

American parties and investors who like the idea go here. Oh, and in case you can't find it - we've marked it for you. This great American alternative is almost right across the fabulous Auburn-Cord-Duesenberg Museum.
