Golden Healey starring in Texas.

Are car museums hip again? Or are classic cars slowly disappearing from the street into final housing? This year alone three major museums needed to  be added to the world list: Mullin, Louwman and now Texas. Tomorrow will see the grand opening of the: Texas Museum of Automotive History. A unique works-built 1958 Austin-Healey 100-Six Roadster, star of the 1958 London Motor Show, will be starring  at the new museum's inaugural art deco gala on Saturday, November 20th in Dallas.
Visitors to The London Motor Show in 1958 were pushing and pulling to catch a glimpse of “Goldie”, the gold plated Austin- Healey. It is said that Donald Healey himself proclaimed the car  “the most sumptuously luxurious sports car ever made”. Goldie was built by the factory as a one-off promotional vehicle to elicit new publicity for the Austin-Healey brand.  All of the metalwork on the exterior was gold plated, from bumpers to grille, to headlight rings to gold-plated wire wheels. As was everything else that would normally be chromed. British newspaper The Daily Express liked it so much they bought it to serve as a reader competition prize in 1958. But 52 years later the car is most seen guest in Texas!  ( photos courtesy Worldwide Auctioneers )
