Groovy Goodwood: who cares about the cars?

This year the Goodwood Revival placed emphasis on the events of 50 years ago when England won the World Cup final at Wembley; the only person to win the World Championship driving his own car, Australian Jack Brabham's Repco, based on an Oldsmobile block, dominated the new 3 litre formula; and the Goodwood circuit, "the home of British motor racing" closed.

The Revival is such a diverse event. One of the most wonderful things besides the actual racing, is the embrace of the crowds to dress in period costume. This year there were many more mini-skirts on 'display' in this sartorial extravaganza emulating the spirit of the age. As the cars got faster and faster, the hemlines became shorter and shorter. As motor racing moved from 1950s Jaguar C-Type to hip Mini Cooper S, stylish E-Type and Aston Martin DB4 GT, so did the music go from rock 'n roll to 'pop', from Bill Haley to The Beatles and the Rolling Stones.

Fitting that this year the Revival EP, appropriately on 12" vinyl with tracks from '60s legends The Spencer Davis Group, The Who, The Supremes and the inimitable Dusty Springfield was created. Launched to support the D-Day Revisited charity, the listening booths were a mecca for those who crave the sounds, wear their hair and don the fashion of the time when motor sport became 'cool'.

Groovy baby!
