It’s not our habit to borrow words from traders, car salesmen, auctioneers and other smart fellows, but in this case we gladly make an exception. In the context of ‘never let the truth spoil a good story’ this is what H&H Auctions writes about a striking but part fire damaged Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud limousine, formerly registered as ‘ALC 1’: “The vendor first saw ALC 1, aged 14, at the 1957 Motor Show. Upon being told "not to touch it" by the salesman he replied that he would own it one day - a promise he made good in 1971!” That’s gold.
The big car comes with four-door body by Freestone & Webb and was first registered in November ’57. And to continue the auction blurb: “It is understood to have been first owned by Zsa Zsa Gabor before passing to Bernard Walsh of Wheelers Restaurants.” Okay, that seems a bit too much to us – it would have been worth to check that provenance, wouldn’t it? And to carry on: “The vendor re-registered it as TOY 18 but whilst this appears on the old logbook it is not confirmed whether this is still attached to the car.” Right. But anyhow: we love it, and think it will be well worth the £ 5,000 - 7,000 estimate. Whether it’s all true or not!
