Historics returns a bullish 70% sale of 162 fine and varied consignments on Saturday 22nd September

AUCTION REVIEW: Historics at Brooklands, Saturday, September 22nd

Bullish 70% sale result from 162 fine and varied consignments

A tumbling temperature and increasing showers during sale day didn’t deter a capacity auction hall from bidding freely at Historics’ latest auction last Saturday 22nd September, with substantial pre-sale telephone and on-line international bidder registrations adding to the buoyant atmosphere....and a bullish 70% sale result.

For this, its 36th auction since opening its doors in 2010, Historics’ consignment team used their experience to the full, delivering their customary broad and well-balanced selection of interesting and fine classics, with a total of 162 motor cars passing beneath the hammer in the seven-hour sale.

When home-time beckoned, Auction Director, Edward Bridger-Stille, commented:

“Our team put in tremendous efforts to consign a first-class offering here and the 70% sale result speaks for itself. Despite the constant movement in values, and prevalent economic concerns, it’s a reflection of the buoyancy of the market when fine quality, sought-after cars are offered and priced correctly.  Yet again, I’m delighted to say it mirrors our consistent performance and high rate of sale.”

The Historics sale in numbers

  • The newest:  2017 Caterham Seven Sprint - one of 60 Caterham anniversary models, covering just 349 miles since new
  • The longest:  The stunningly-finned 1959 Cadillac Fleetwood, all 18' 9" of it.

It was a strong day for British sports cars with 31 of the 37 offerings from Alvis, Austin-Healey, Jaguar, Lotus, MG and Triumph selling robustly.

Austin-Healey: Of the five models from 1955-1967, four pass to fresh owners, top billing going to a near flawless, fast-road example of a 1967 Austin-Healey 3000 Mk. III BJ8 (Phase II) which soars to £70,000.

Bentley: A 2006 Bentley Azure with just 28,000 miles sells at top estimate for £90,000

Jaguar: 10 of 14 models from 1958 to 2002 move on to new owners, including a quartet of fine and varied E-Types, a 1969 Jaguar Series II Coupé (4.2 litre) proving every bit as desirable as its roadster stablemates as it exceeds its estimate, settling at £75,040.

Lada: The most unusual sale consignment – the 2004 World Touring Car Championship factory-entered Lada Granta of UK racing driver James Thompson, less engine and gearbox. It leaves the hall head-scratching and fails to find a buyer on the day and offers are now invited post-sale by Historics.  A V8 and a hillclimb beckons?
