One of the founders of Indianapolis race track was Carl Fisher. He paced the first Indy 500 – in his personal car – because he felt a rolling start would be safer than the traditional drivers' sprint. Since then, the pace laps that start the race have become a popular tradition of the Indy 500. From 1945 until today Chevrolet has supplied 22 vehicles as the Official Pace Car for the Indy 500. The first postwar Chevrolet to pace the Indy 500 was a 1948 Convertible, shown here with track officials for that year's race. It was driven by Indianapolis Speedway President Wilber Shaw. The official pace car of the Indy 500 in 1955 was a Chevrolet Bel Air, powered by a first-year Chevrolet small-block V-8 and the 1969 pace car, a Camaro RS/SS, was later followed by 3,575 replicas which sold very quickly. And to celebrate the “100 Year’s of Chevrolet” this year’s pace car will also be a Chevrolet, a retro-version of that 1969 Camaro.
