Last week we published a feature about the 'Lonely roads of Ireland'. If you have an interest in Irish Motorsport or are planning any sort of touring holiday in Ireland the book reviewed below is a must have.
Rod McComb, involved in the Irish Rally scene for over fifty years, has detailed out twenty of the "Classic" rally stages from throughout Ireland. This in itself would be the basis for an ideal motoring holiday, whether by motorcycle or car, as these roads are set in some of Irelands most spectacular landscapes. In addition there are chapters of anecdotes and reminisces of past events from officials, competitors and spectators ably woven together by Rod, who's knowledge and enthusiasm for Irish stage rallying is unsurpassed. The book covers the Circuit of Ireland, the Circuit of Ireland Retrospective, Dundrod races and many other events but wisely does not seek to be a history. Somehow stories range from the wake of the world's oldest cow, marshalling in an Armoured car and fine dining in a field somewhere West of Oughterard.
The superb photographs are mainly provided by Esler Crawford who has been documenting Irish rallying from the 1960's.
Altogether great fun and motorsport as it should be as well as a real bargain of a book at £16 plus postage and available through Amazon.
