Is this the last of the affordable 1960s Ferraris?

Is the time to buy a 1960s Ferrari GT at auction definitely over for the non-millionaires among us? Perhaps not. If you are not too picky, you may be able to buy this 330 GT 2+2 for a price that may be considered outright cheap compared to just about all of its sister models from around the same time. It’s a 1966 second-series example, chassis number 8319 for the aficionados among you, that was originally built as a European-specification example with power windows and a five-speed manual transmission and finished in Bianco (white) and Rosso (red) interior. Having said that, the first of the car’s flaws is uncovered: it does not wear its original paint colour anymore. Instead, it wears a gorgeous metallic blue that may well suit it even better.

But there are more imperfections. Take a deep breath. It had accident damage in the not so far past. The transmission tunnel and dashboard have been modified to non-standard specification. And just about all of the early history is missing. It was sold in Spain, that’s all we know. Oh – when you look a bit closer you will notice a skew rear bumper and badges that may need some work. Well, it’s all not too difficult to overcome, isn’t it? Just look at the positive side. It’s got its matching numbers, which cannot even be said for some of the million dollar models. The interior looks lovingly refurbished in its original red. Being the series 2-model, it comes with the pretty single headlights, cool side vents and lovely 10 holes wheels. And, hey, it wears Monaco plates!

So in the light of the day, the £170- to £190,000 estimate may well be a very good price. It’s offered by RM Sothebys in London next weekend, see the full description here. There’s a slightly later (1968) GTC-version in the same sale with better provenance and no flaws, but you have to fork out almost three times as much for that…
