Little Susie remembered

Brothers Don and Phil Everly may have had 25 top-40 hits in the first five years of their recording career alone; ‘Wake Up Little Susie’ was their first number 1 hit. It hit the top spot in the charts on this very day in 1957. Almost 60 years later it’s hard to believe the lyrics were considered controversial at the time. It’s all about a teenage boy and girl who innocently fall asleep in the (drive-in?) cinema, coming home too late as a result.

We've both been sound asleep
Wake up little Susie and weep
The movie's over, it's four o'clock
And we're in trouble deep

The movie wasn't so hot
It didn't have much of a plot
We fell asleep, our goose is cooked
Our reputation is shot

As a matter of fact, the song was banned in Boston at one point. Only to make it more in demand. All we can say it’s still a very catchy song, which was covered by umpteen other artists, from Simon and Garfunkel to The Grateful Dead and from the Flying Burrito Brothers to Donny Osmond!
