Not long ago we were advised about an early Porsche 911 unused and stored since more than 20 years. The info given was appealing; the interest for early 911s has increased a lot since last year´s 50th anniversary, and the prices are rising continously. Only a few days later we were in the bodega where the car was suppossed to be. The owner, very kind, invited us to enter, and at the bottom of a large yard we saw a little door opened, with something red inside . There it was! Our host proceeded to open the door, and suddenly we saw a... 1970s 911?!?
You can imagine we felt deep dissapointment, as we were hoping to see a 911T of the first series. Quickly the owner of the car explained us that this car was modernised heavily in the late 1970s, when new front wings, bumpers, bonnet, new wheels and new tail lights were added. The new tyres which were mounted ten years ago were never used.
That aside, the car´s interior was tinted in a light colour and a horrible black paint was added to every gap (photo 4). As we had strong doubts regarding the real age of the car, we looked at the chassis numbers located in the front trunk... and yes! The VIN started with "302", a number which corresponds to the production year 1965 (photo 5). Despite that, the restoration costs to bring it back to 1965 standards - not to say concours - would go way beyond the cars market value. Or?
