There are several factors that can add value to a car, but two of the best of them are: 1. It being a works car. 2. It being used in a movie of some note. This Lotus 59 single seater, to be sold with Coys next week, has the advantage of both. In the first place it was a Team Lotus car used for the European Formula 3 Championship by rookie Bev Bond. Bond raced it well and is said to have lapped James Hunt with this very car back in 1970.
Hunt was a Lotus 59 driver, too, and so film makers were looking for one when ‘Rush’ was made. That’s the 2013 movie about the rivalry between Hunt and Niki Lauda. In fact this all started at Chrystal Palace back in 1970, when Hunt and his Lotus 59 challenged newcomer Lauda for the first time. And you guessed it: the car used for filming became this very Lotus. What’s more: it is ready to race and comes with invites to this years 73rd Goodwood Members Meeting and the Oldtimer Grand Prix at the Nürburgring.
Unfortunately both Bond as Hunt are no longer with us. Bev Bond drove the car once more at Oulton Park before sadly passing away in 2013; we know about Hunt (if not watch Rush). And while you are bidding on the Lotus with this in mind, you may like this little piece of memorabilia during the same sale…
