One more month to Brexit – How about your classic car?

Britain’s exit to the European Union is now only a month away. So it may be about time to see if the move will affect you and your beloved classic car(s). What you should know in eight points, according to those in the know:

1. Free movement of classic cars and parts to and from Europe will be limited.

2. You will have to pay VAT when exporting a classic from the UK.

3. You will also have to pay a 10% duty on the value of the car when doing so.

4. The lack of free movement across the EU could well increase the price of classics.

5. The value of the pound may well be affected. Most think it will be falling.

6. Brexit will almost certainly cause a disruption to the balance of the classic car market across Europe, say some.

7. Financial markets may well be affected, causing more investors focusing on classic cars, say others.

8. British traders may be selling more cars to markets beyond Europe.

So… good or bad news? We can’t be sure until it happens. We are pretty curious though. What do you think?

Pourquoi parler ou écrire anglais quand les anglais nous quittent pour créer un paradis fiscal.
Parlez et surtout écrivez dans votre propre langue européenne, elles sont toutes belles et chargées d'histoire
et cela nous permet de les apprendre.

I'm sure that for many (most?), there will be no difference at all....life will still go on. May affect traders to some extent but I'm sure all will find ways around things and follow procedures as necessary. As far as I'm concerned, I'll still be motoring around in the MG and Austin 7 as normal.
There's far too much scaremongering over this matter, we were not always in the EU and we managed fine. The main problem, it seems to me, is the complete mess and complications caused by incompetent politicians and unelected buraucrats in Europe ...all with their own agendas.

The anti Common Market / EU people lied when we went in and lied again when the UK had the referendam . We can only hope common sense will prevail and we stay in, with the 'empty vessels' making all the noise about the non existant benefits, should we leave the EU, be finally kicked into touch.

As one who travels monthly to the EU and regularly take my vintage car, it will be like going back to the Fifty's, rather then the 21st centuary . God Help us !

What about exporting spare parts to the EU? I assume that the same rules apply for them. It will mean that Autojumble s such as Beaulieu will be down on numbers at the gate. It will be interesting to see how auction houses get on in the next month.....

I think that there will be many possibilities for us here in UK.

The UK citizens have always manage it and will manage it also now.

Don t give up, British is number one in classic cars in Europe.

Just look which is the number one magazine and auction city in Europe.

Scaremongerers enough in this world. Politicians and press do not need your support.
We will still go to the UK for their great events, still buy parts and cars overthere, because the prices, services and delays in delivery in France are a disaster.
Paying VAT when exporting from the UK???? What a nonsense. Maybe you mean importing in the EU from the UK.
The "say some" and "they say" points are really not more than that and not worthy your pages.
This Brexit is a great opportunity for the Brits and the classic-/vintagecar market as every big change. It might be a great example for the rest of the EU countries to see how not to get rid of Brussels.

Britain’s exit from the EU will hopefully distance us from the stifling regulatory regimes that are attached to the ownership of old cars in some parts of Europe, so that creativity and fun remain alive and well.

I do not understand why the author believes VAT and 10% excise duty would be payable on a car exported from the UK. (I assume the author means sold outside the UK or permanently leaves the UK under the same ownership). VAT and duty are not payable on cars exported to non-EU nations, so why would VAT and duty be payable when a car is exported from the UK into the EU?

Separately, I not believe movement restrictions will increase prices. Generally, the opposite is true. Restrictions on movement reduce the pool of buyers, depressing values.

Brexit breaks through the Prewarcar barrier, previously a sanctum sanctorum of old car eccentricity.
Politics and old cars DO NOT MIX.

Well, we will not be going to classic car events or buy from the UK for a while, until we know how we will be affected and the rules and regulations are firm.
They say that the entry ports will be jammed, also therefore we will ban the UK from our agenda until we know that they worked out a system for easy acces.
If we have to pay VAT en import duties, then we can wait until the £ drops for the same %...
Plenty of interesting "continental" cars in Europe, no need for an Alvis or RR.

I am unsure this is correct, you would normally not pay VAT on something that is sold outside the UK ( and there is no VAT on UK registered old vehicles anyway!) but you will be liable both for VAT on entry into the EU, plus duty and if the UK is anything to go by, payable on the car, shipping, and any work carried out before import ( assuming you are sufficiently unwise as to declare it!) VAT, in the UK, is payable on purchase price+ transport (including transport within the source country) ,+ work carried out +any fees from the customs clearing agents, and the duty!!! A tax on a tax!

But as UK vehicles prices are generally considerably better and cheaper than in the EU, and the GBP is currently a third less than pre-referendum, UK cars, already cheap, will be cheaper. Lots of ex-US LHD cars in the UK, if I were planning to buy something, I'd buy my GBP now up front?
