We like the idea for this book ‘Pack die badehose ein’ – (Pack the swimsuit), showing a plethora of photographs of families travelling in their good old four-wheelers to seek the sun. It’s a German book and thus concentrates on German people on German holidays (often to southern Europe), very often in German cars of the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. But the idea is of course the same everywhere. Or was, perhaps, as many families have now moved on to aeroplanes to bring them further away in less time. But perhaps not so happy as flying is suffering? Who does not have memories from the back seat of his parent’s saloon or station wagon? Playing games and eating sandwiches along the motorway.
The cars often weren’t very big, while families sometimes were and it’s great to see how ingenious people were to fit in all of their belongings. A tent in the trunk or a caravan on the towbar was often enough to accommodate motor and father, sisters and brothers. But not before they’d taken the challenges of Alpine passes and border controls. These were happy days, no doubt, and author Alexander F. Storz has amassed their images and their stories of cars on vacation in his 176 page book. For sale here.
