Pretty in pink

Motor manufacturers every now and then claim they have engineered a car, purely with women drivers in mind. In fact this statement comes up as regular as the car is with us. But the attempts to introduce women models have never been more entertaining than they were in the 1950s and 1960s. Take the Dodge La Femme of 1955 - a vehicle of which the name alone says a thing. Designed to appeal exclusively to women, the La Femme came in a pink and white colour scheme and was equiped with a matching handbag and lipstick holder and an interior in ‘Jacquard fabric in pastel rose’, to name just a few of its items.

A decade ahead women had lost some of their innocence – the market for a bold women’s model was still alive. The 1965 Ford Mustang given to Playmate of the Year Donna Michelle proved it, as ‘Playmate Pink’ soon became an optional exterior colour for the Ford pony car. Who of you remember the other goodies she received? Among them a fabulous Admiral 21” color tv; Lady Elgin diamond cocktail ring; 14K 23-jewel Helen wrist watch; Alper-Richman mink evening jacket and Honda C50 motor cycle.
