Scooters steal show at Villa d’Este

Europe’s most prestigious motoring event – the eminent Concorso d’Eleganza of Villa d’Este, saw a colourful line-up of scooters last weekend. And they took the limelight from several of the four-wheelers.

With names such as ‘Speed Demons of the Golden Age’, ‘Fast and Flamboyant Playboys’ Toys’ or ‘Heroes of the Jet Age’, all the usual suspects from wealthy car collectors were there. Coachbuilt beauties from the great makes, plenty of them good for six-figure sums. Sure, there were some surprises: the fantastic Astra Coupe for example, as well as the Abarth 1000 Bialbero record car. And slightly more down to earth the Alfa Giulietta SS prototipo (which won Best of show), an Intermeccanica Imp, and that gorgeous oily-rag Frua-bodied Maserati A6G in ‘Portugal taxi’ colour scheme.

But the class of ‘1950s scooters that did not come from the market leaders’ hid the real wonders of the show. On above picture, starting from the left hand top corner, going with the hands of the clock you see here: the Bastert Einspurauto, the Prina Orix Gran Lusso, the Salsbury 85, the SAI Ambrosino, the Gianca Nibbio and – looking pretty much like a Vespa-clone - the Maserati (!) M2. That's even rarer than the aforementioned A6G...
