Held in the beautiful setting of the Royal Exhibition Building in Melbourne, Motorclassica, the Australian International Concours d'Elegance and Classic Motor Show is a globally recognised event and the best in the Southern Hemisphere.
There were plenty of incredible pre and post war cars to salivate over, hence it came as a huge surprise when Chairman, John Virgo and his team of Judges contentiously announced the winner to be an Australian made car! Best of Show went to a 1969 Holden Monaro GTS. Exactly how this vehicle will sit alongside the victors of other major events remains to be seen. This fantastic example, which also took the 'Restoration of the Year' trophy, though has certainly set the cat amongst the established order of pigeons, as a follow up to last year's winner a Ferrari 275 Lusso.
The classes at any such event are always hotly contested amongst the wonderful cars on display. The incredibly beautiful 1956 Alfa
Romeo 1900 C Super Sprint won the 'Post-War Classic Closed' class, along with the special prize celebrating '90 Years of Touring Superleggera', whilst the '130 Years of Mercedes-Benz' prize went to a superb 1955 Gullwing owned by trucking magnate Lindsay Fox.
And in case you were wondering, the Monaro is named after the eponymous region and highway in New South Wales. I am not sure what guest of honour Chad McQueen made of it.
