Take a good look when it passes you

The photo shows the Gerald Palmer-designed Wolseley 15/50 in production at Cowley during the days of the British Motor Corporation, but the above slogan comes from Jowett who used it to introduce their all-new Javelin, also designed by Gerald Palmer (1911-1999). Aged 16 Palmer had already made a special body for his father’s Model-T, before he became an engineering apprentice at truck-maker Scammell. Later Palmer worked at the Morris Drawing office in Cowley, but in 1942 left for Jowett. Lured back to MG in 1949 Palmer set up an MG Design Office at Cowley, where he designed the MG Magnette and the Wolseley 4/44. By 1955, after the introduction of the Riley Pathfinder and Wolseley 6/90 models, Palmer was sacked due to internal BMC policy. He then went to Vauxhall where he became responsible for the Viva and Victor range before retiring in 1972. The centennial of Gerald Palmers birthday will be celebrated on Saturday 28th May at the Heritage Motor Centre, Gaydon.
