The Chevy Nova disappearing oil Mystery

Dominic P. wrote to us about an engine issue that overcome him, one that must have happened to many others as well. Your editor experienced something similar with a Lancia B Spider. Anyway here is the story from Dominic:
"My longest unsolved mystery took decades, which should have been weeks, as it appears to be profoundly simplistic, yet is not? I came upon a parked old Chevrolet Nova decades ago in front of a private home. Parked in the grass without plates, a rust free body, not much paint and the owner wanted only $50. So I had towed it home. It was to be a present to a girl that I dated, to bring her some smiles.
I quickly got it running, did the regular checks and repairs, the engine was that 1929-onward straight-6 cylinder, good on gas and performance. It did not smoke at all, and no soot in the pipes, had absolutely no oil leaks of any kind (which I repeatedly checked), but used up a quart of oil faster than you could get to the next gas station. I ran out of time along with brain energy, put a case of oil in the trunk. So, my challenge to you is, what happened to all that oil?"

Editor: we understand the girl and the car disappeared as well, but that's another story.
