The Dart - Love it or Leave it

When Daimler introduced its new sports car, the Dart, at the New York Auto Show in 1959 it created quite a stir and not always a favourable one. Yes, the Dart was fast thanks to its V8 engine, but it had fibreglass body and that wasn’t everybody’s taste, let alone its looks which you definitely had to get used to. The reason Daimler used fibre-glass was that they didn’t plan on a large production and that it was cheap to manufacture, which was the main reason as Daimler was already in financial troubles. Then they were hit by Dodge who claimed the Dart-name and threatened to sue, so Daimler changed the name Dart to SP250. But things change over time and with only 2648 SP250’s made, it is now a highly collectible car. This 1961 example can be seen at Coys who will offer it at their Spring Auction on March 8.
