THE INTERNATIONAL AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRYIN ESSEN AT THE TECHNO-CLASSICA
Tradition & modernity: brand values made visible

The international automotive industry presents its history divisions at TECHNO-CLASSICA ESSEN with more than 20 brands.
Techno-Classica Essen is a pleasant must-attend event for automobile manufacturers who also convey their brand values via history departments. For such traditional brands, the attractive presentation of brand values, in which tradition and company history play an immensely important role, is at the centre of the presentation in Essen. Many manufacturers show entire lines of ancestors and compare current models with historical vehicles. It goes without saying that entertainment and background information are not neglected. For visitors to Techno-Classica Essen, the variety on offer is far more than just an oversized car quartet, a competition of brands and performance data, because the manufacturers focus on very different aspects of their past.

Where Audi presents unusual “spacecrafts”, BMW shows the 100-year success story of record drives and flights, Mercedes-Benz celebrates the 50th anniversary of the legendary C 111, and Volkswagen commemorates 70 years of the VW Beetle convertible and, like BMW, presents world records – to name just a few examples. Sport, two-wheelers, luxury, family cars: it is this diversity that is so typical of Techno-Classica Essen and which, complemented by the appearances of the manufacturers over the past 30 years, always offers exciting infotainment.
Until shortly before the opening of the Classic World Show, many of the companies keep a mysterious silence about their appearances – but some have already mentioned some keywords.

AUDI
Audi with mobile miracles of space
Under the working title “Raumwunder”, Audi AG has presented this year’s factory stand at Techno-Classica Essen and at the same time celebrates “70 Years in Ingolstadt”. To celebrate the start of production after the Second World War, the brand with the four rings presents a DKW 1949 Fast Truck and other large-capacity automobiles: From the DKW F85 “Woody” from 1951 to the Audi 100 Avant from 1978. A 1949 DKW RT 125 W with trailer coupling demonstrates that even motorcycles with a trailer can be transformed into a pick-up ...

AUTOSTADT: The Autostadt with refined corporate classics
As the Volkswagen Group’s communication platform, the Autostadt is planning a spectacular show to mark the 30th anniversary of Techno-Classica Essen: The Autostadt lines up many of the vehicles presented at the stands of the Volkswagen Group brands as tuned, refined or individualised exemplars: In Hall 4, for example, the Autostadt combines the overall show of the world’s largest car manufacturer into a unique experience. This experience can even be deepened: At the Autostadt stand, a specially programmed driving simulator offers deceptively real driving experiences with classic automobiles.

BMW
BMW with records and victories

This year, the BMW Group Classic – together with the BMW and MINI brand clubs – resides with its impressive stand in Hall 6 and presents a total of almost 30 vehicles themed “100 Years of Records and Victories”: In 1919, an aircraft equipped with a BMW aircraft engine (BMW IV) reached an altitude of 9,760 metres, which had never been reached before. This record is regarded as the starting point for many other records and motorsport successes in the over 100-year history of BMW. BMW Group Classic demonstrates some of these top performances with fascinating exhibits – such as the Le Mans winning car from 1999, a BMW V12 LMR. Traditionally, the clubs play a major role on the large BMW stand, and BMW plans to also offer a view into the restoration workshop and the BMW Group Classic vehicle hall, as well as to present the range of spare parts for BMW classics on the basis of individual examples.

CITROËN
Citroën street with 100 year anniversary celebration

Like the Opel brand, which also belongs to the PSA Group, Citroën also relies on the proven services of the clubs: the Citroën show, which this year is particularly impressive with 15 classic vehicles, is organised by the “Citroën-Straße” exhibitor association under the auspices of Amicale Citroën International (ACI) and represents 14 different clubs with around 12,000 German enthusiasts.
This year’s theme: “100 Years of Citroën”. The club organisers have succeeded in bringing a unique retrospective with classic automobiles from every decade of Citroën automobile construction to Essen against an attractive backdrop – starting with the Type A from the first year of Citroën to the rare C6 (2005-2012), of which fewer examples were built than the legendary and rare SM.

DUCATI
Ducati with classic motorcycle

At this year’s Techno Classica, the Autostadt in Wolfsburg presents the motorcycle brand Ducati, among others. A 1973 Ducati Scrambler is on display at the stand, a true all-round motorcycle with Ducati desmodromic* engine, the best-selling Ducati model from 1962 to 1978. In contrast, there is the brawny Ducati Scrambler Rivatoro, 2016 successful participant of a competition of Scrambler conversions. KRT-Framework, Ducati Rhein-Sieg and Motorrad Tellenbrock had created these scramblers in café-racer look with riveted aluminium monocoque. The two fascinating motorcycles exemplify the difference between series production and individualisation – albeit the time difference of almost 45 years ...
* Desmodromic: The desmodromic or forced valve control operates without valve springs. The valves are actively opened and closed by a mechanism (instead of the usual valve springs). This allows – at least theoretically – higher speeds, since the valve flutter typical for spring-closed valves does not occur at extreme speeds.

FCA HERITAGE
FCA Heritage with rarities from Abarth, Alfa Romeo, Fiat and the new Alfa Romeo F1

FCA Heritage, the division of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) responsible for the history of the Abarth, Alfa Romeo, Fiat and Lancia brands, presents three major themes at Techno-Classica Essen: ⚫ the 70th anniversary of the Abarth brand,⚫ the new Alfa Romeo Formula 1 team and the ⚫ “Reloaded by Creators” initiative.

FCA Heritage: Abarth
Abarth vehicles are handy and especially powerful but above all small and biting like the Scorpio – and have been for 70 years: Abarth & C. was founded in 1949 in Bologna by Carlo Abarth and Armando Scagliarini, but soon moved to Turin. In 1971, Abarth sold the company to Fiat. Until then, its cars had achieved up to 600 race and class victories annually, plus many world records. Representing the many small, snappy winning cars with the scorpion in their coat of arms, FCA Heritage presents the Fiat Nuova 500 elaborazione Abarth “Record”, which broke several world speed records in 1957 as the “piccola grande vettura”* for the Abarth anniversary. Also on the FCA stand: a Fiat 500 elaborata Abarth from 1974.
*”piccola grande vettura”: little great car

FCA Heritage: Alfa Romeo
Many do not have it in mind anymore: It was an Alfa Romeo Tipo 158 “Alfetta” which won the first Formula 1 race ever in 1950 with Nino Farina. Last year, after a 30-year break, Alfa Romeo returned to Formula One – and will be starting again this year – with new drivers and a new team name: Alfa Romeo Racing. The Formula 1 racing cars, which have been redesigned for the 2019 season as the Alfa Romeo Racing C38, are driven by Kimi Raikkonen and Antonio Giovinazzi. The C38, painted in the new Alfa Romeo team colour, celebrates its German premiere as a mockup at the Techno-Classica Essen, flanked by the Alfetta Tipo 159 (World Championship car of 1951) and an Alfa Romeo Racing Giulia in Formula 1 team colours limited to ten cars, which is also presented to the German public for the first time.

FCA Heritage: Reloaded By Creators
The initiative “Reloaded by Creators”, presented last year at Techno-Classica by FCA Heritage, is now firmly established: This is based on the offer to buy carefully selected classics directly from the original manufacturer – as delivered. The range includes vintage cars purchased from FCA Heritage, which have been restored to their original condition. Four examples of the “Reloaded by Creators” initiative will be on display at the large FCA Heritage stand in Hall 3, such as an Alfa Romeo 8C Spider from 2010: the roadster, built in a run of just 500 copies, has recently been overhauled in the Alfa Romeo Classiche workshops, issued with a certificate of authenticity and is for sale. The other “reloaded” classics also convince with the same qualities: a Fiat 124 Spider, a Pininfarina Spider Europa and an Alfa Romeo 8C Coupé.

FERRARI
Ferrari with Nigel Mansell’s Ferrari F 40

The Ferrari factory stand in Hall 3 is again sponsored this year by Eberlein Automobile GmbH, which is one of the few “Ferrari Classiche Officina” – the official offshoot of the Ferrari history workshop with all the expertise and access options in the parent plant. At the time of going to press, not all the exhibits had been determined yet, but it is certain that among the Ferrari for sale there is a Ferrari F 40 from 1989, which the 1992 Formula 1 world champion Nigel Mansell bought as a new car. And as in previous years, the Ferrari stand will surprise you with some automotive highlights ...

FORD
Ford with birthday party “50 Years of Ford Capri”

Ford traditionally presents itself and its history in cooperation with the most important German Ford clubs at Techno-Classica Essen. This year the focus is on the 50th birthday of the Ford Capri. With around 14 Capri models – including some unusual rarities – from club members and from the Ford Classic Car collection, Ford conveys the fascination of the anniversary up close. The Capri show is framed by other Ford classics. …

MERCEDES-BENZ
Mercedes-Benz with a newly conceptual design for the large presentation

Mercedes-Benz is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the C 111 experimental vehicle, which was first presented to the public at the IAA in 1969 and caused a sensation – even as a record vehicle – on a newly designed, spectacular stand. Six unique pieces of this super sports car are on display. Other eye-catchers: a 1903 Mercedes Simplex – the most advanced automobile of its time – together with the Mercedes among the electric ones, the new EQC. ALL TIME STARS (the vehicle trade organisation of Mercedes-Benz Classic), shows a very special 300 SL with gullwing doors as an original barn find. Mercedes-Benz Classic is found in Hall 1 together with the Classic Partners and many German brand clubs.

MINI
MINI celebrates its 60th anniversary

The MINI brand, which is part of the BMW Group since 1995, celebrates the 60th anniversary of the then revolutionary Mini: The success story of the legendary British small car began with the presentation of the first Mini in 1959. His designer Alec Issigonis (in 1969 Sir Alec Issigonis was elevated to the nobility as Knight Bachelor Sir Alec Issigonis) created a design concept with the transversely installed front engine with gearbox flanged underneath, which establish itself as the basis for many later compact cars. At the MINI stand, some significant mini exhibits are presented from the 60-year history of the trendsetter.

OPEL
Opel with Caravan Salon

Like last year, the association Alt-Opel Interessengemeinschaft von 1972 e. V. is holding up the flag of Adam Opel G at the 31st edition of Techno-Classica Essen. The club with more than 2,500 members from 26 nations, previously a traditional guest and co-designer at the Opel factory stand in Hall 2, once again acts as host this year: Alt-Opel IG is responsible for the design and organisation of the trade fair stand of Germany’s oldest car brand at the Classics World Show. Once again, the club members are demonstrating the importance and competence of volunteers in the classic automobile scene. In addition, they invite visitors to an interesting and professionally designed representative office of the Hessian car manufacturer and present Opel models, some of which were only built in small numbers and have now virtually disappeared from the road.
Under the theme “Caravans of the 1960s and 1970s” the Opel enthusiasts present an Opel Rekord C Caravan, a Kadett B Caravan and an Opel Blitz fire engine crew van. Highlight on the stand of the brand with the flash of lightning, however, is an Opel Diplomat 2.8 E, which was approved by the bodybuilder Vogt in 1974 as a unique car with the rear end of the Rekord D as a station wagon. Its appearance at Techno-Classica Essen is a sensation for Opel enthusiasts: this car was considered lost between the end of 1990 and 2016 – there were not even brochures or contemporary photos. At the Alt-Opel IG stand, the Vogt Diplomat will be presented to the public in its new state for the first time after thorough restoration.
And who would like more infotainment on Opel? In Hall 2, the organiser has accommodated several other Opel clubs in the immediate vicinity of the Alt-Opel IG area: Klein-Rüsselsheim in Essen ...

PEUGEOT
Peugeot with coupé and convertible anniversary

50 years ago, with the 504 convertible and the 504 coupé, Peugeot added two dignifiedly styled cars by Sergio Pininfarina to the 504 sedan created by Pininfarina designer Aldo Brovarone, which was built one year earlier. At Techno-Classica Essen, Peugeot’s stand focuses on this anniversary with a 504 Coupé built by 26,128. A 504 in rally version illustrates the robustness of the French evergreen and a new 508 limousine builds the bridge to modernity.

PORSCHE

Porsche with mid-engine anniversary The traditionally spectacular appearance of Dr. Ing. h. c. F. Porsche AG in 2019 is themed “50 years of Porsche 914”. Porsche Classic shows the celebrant presented in 1969 as VW-Porsche 914 (with four-cylinder mid-engine) and as Porsche 914/6 (with six-cylinder mid-engine) in Hall 4 as Porsche 914/6, and as one of two produced Porsche 914/8 (with eight-cylinder racing engine). In addition, approx. ten classic Porsche cars from worldwide Porsche Classic partners and factory restoration vehicles can be admired. Furthermore, the company from Stuttgart shows many new classic original parts and accessories, and also presents individualisation options of the Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur for new vehicles ex works. This year, the Porsche clubs again present themselves in Hall 3. …

SEAT
SEAT with two anniversaries |
Since 2006, SEAT has presented their automobiles regularly at Techno Classica Essen – and this year is celebrating two 50th anniversaries: both the SEAT 1430 as a refined derivative of the SEAT 124 and the SEAT 850 Sport Spider which was launched in 1969 – symbolising the then awakened self-confidence of the Spanish automobile manufacturer. At the SEAT stand in the Volkswagen Group Hall 4, the 1430 is in the limelight as a saloon car and as a five-door station wagon as well as the pretty 850 Sport Spider.

ŠKODA
ŠKODA with 111 years old unique specimen and Octavia anniversary

ŠKODA offers a full programme at Techno-Classica Essen: The main theme is “60 years of ŠKODA Octavia” with an impressive presentation of various historical Octavia and the Felicia convertible derived from it. The company from Mladá Boleslav illustrates the ŠKODA motorsports activities with an original, current Octavia WRC and an “old” Octavia 1200 TS from 1961. Special eye-catchers are also the freshly restored, Laurin & Klement BSC from 1908 (the only preserved exemplar) and a “barn find”, as well as an exhibit on the subject of classic car restoration. The premiere of a three-volume ŠKODA chronicle is another highlight.

VOLKSWAGEN
Volkswagen with records, anniversaries and apprentices
|
Volkswagen is presenting three exhibitors themed “The World of Volkswagen Classics”: Volkswagen Classic, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles Oldtimer and Volkswagen Classic Parts – each with fascinating exhibits on exciting themes. 70 years of series production of the Beetle convertible and records from Volkswagen are on the agenda, as are 60 years of mobile radar measurement with the first “Blitzer-Bulli” and 40 years of Volkswagen T3. The world’s largest car manufacturer is also presenting an apprentice project by Volkswagen Osnabrück: the apprentices are finalising the restoration of a Type 3 1600 TL at Techno-Classica Essen. Traditionally, detailed information is also available about classic spare parts with significant exhibits. …

VOLVO
Volvo with limousine tradition The Swedish Volvo brand is gathering more than 90 years of limousine tradition at its stand in Hall 3: from the first limousine, the PV4 from 1927, to the latest S60, which will be launched this spring. The exhibits include, for example, a 1966 “Amazon” and a 1981 240 Turbo. The star is the Volvo PV 36 “Carioca” from 1935, named after a South American dance. The Person Vagn formerly owned by Volvo co-founder and engineer Gustaf Larson is in the centre of the factory stand, in the original condition with a fantastic patina.
