Last January Auctions America by RM and Carlisle Events announced that they would join forces. The first token of this cooperation will be a mutual auction at the upcoming Carlisle Spring Festival on April 29th. Lots of American cars in the catalogue and among the many Chevrolets on offer we found this very nice 1969 Chevrolet Corvair 500 Sport Coupe, that was once listed as the very last Corvair. After production ended, Chevrolet retained a certain number in its inventory, of which this one was the last to be sold and went to the Merollis Chevrolet dealership near Detroit. As chassis number 101379W705214 was the last to be owned by Chevrolet, Merollis got a written confirmation from Gerry Phillips, Supervisor of Car Operations, that “regardless of the serial number, the unit purchased from our office November 15, 1975 was indeed the last Corvair to come off the assembly line”. But when Merollis advertised the Corvair with this claim it was found they were mistaken and that the serial number of the last car ends in 6000, not 5214. So it’s not the very last, but close, very close, and to top it off, this Corvair has covered less than 100 miles!
