It’s only a short drive from The Hague to Rotterdam, but wow, that city has changed since this drawing was made in the 1950s. Here we see the ‘Willemsbrug’, the bridge that connected the northern and southern part of the city. Behind it the shipping activities that were the heartbeat of the city. Today all that has changed, Rotterdam is now a city with many modern skyscapers. The bridge has been replaced by a bigger one and the harbor was moved outside the city, first to ‘Maasvlakte 1’, an industrial area created in the 1960s and only recently to ‘Maasvlakte 2’ built by spraying up sand from the floor of the North Sea.
