One of the best things of the Goodwood Revival - in our opinion - is the plethora of 1950s and 1960s bread and butter cars getting into action. MG Magnettes, Austin A35s, Standard 10s. Thanks to the event we’ve seen a rise in interest in a breed of cars that was one day all too common, but which appears to have gone pretty obscure now. There have to be more Austin-Healeys on the road these days than there are Austin A40s - the start grid of your average historic rally will confirm this. Of course this used to be very different back in the day when these events were not yet historic, with plenty of lovely little DKWs, Rileys, Fords, Simcas, Goggomobils and IMPs mingling in between all the bigger machinery. So will it just be a matter of time before these cars will seriously rise in value, too? (photo showing Trabi's - NOT A40's) s at a Tulip Rally stop half a century ago; archive Jeroen Booij)
P.S. by Jeroen Booij: Fortunately our readers are well aware of model designations. The cars shown here are not Austin A40s but Trabant 601s. They were driven by Hans Ullman and Eberhard Asmus in the 1966 Tulip Rallye where they came 42nd and 39rd in their class respectively, leaving a few much more powerfull machines behind!
