It was a 1960 Commer TS3 two-stroke diesel transporter truck that attracted most attention at Bonhams' final sale of the year. Having made headlines in July with selling the ex-Fangio Mercedes-Benz W196 racer for 19 million pounds, Bonhams closed off this historic year in style with the sale of Dick Skipworth's Ecurie Ecosse racing car collection.
Ecurie Ecosse was a legendary Scottish private racing team, starting in 1952 with Jaguar XK120s and eventually winning the Le Mans 24-Hour in 1956 and 1957 with Jaguar D-Types. Top sellers of this collection were a 1952 Jaguar C-Type and a 1956 'Shortnose' D-Type that sold for 2,9 million and 2,6 million pounds respectively. Both cars went to an American buyer. However, the racing team's three-car transporter (of which Corgi Toys made a scale model in the sixties) stunned the audience by being sold for 1,8 million pounds to the same buyer after a 20-minute bidding war. The whole collection, consisting of seven racing cars and the truck, fetched 8,8 million pounds.
The same auction also saw the ex-Ringo Starr 1964 Facel Vega Facel II change hands for 337,500 pounds. A few days later auction house H&H of Warrington (UK) sold the 1958 Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud that once belonged to Eurythmics' frontman Dave Stewart. The car however, was in quite a sorry state due to having been left in a field for years. A restoration project, it still sold for 11,500 pounds.
