While working on my "old" Mercedes W123 last week, I had the luck to listen to the local radio-station, broadcasting some event notes for the upcoming weekend. The radio host informed about the "DET", the big German Citroen 2CV meeting, with participants from all over Europe and about a thousand "ugly ducklings" flapping towards the village of Kommern/Eifel.
I dithered, as I wanted to get the W123 engine ready to its first start since I stored the car back in 2004, but because I once owned and enjoyed (I really enjoyed the change of the rotten chassis against a galvanised one, during winter in my parents garage without electricity and heating) a 2CV for some years, I quickly decided to take a short trip to the DET on saturday afternoon.
And arriving there, I wondered, why I first hesitated with the decision. The weather was perfect, meadows full of lovely old Citroens and tents and charming people all around. Between the 2CV I spotted many AMI-6, AMI-8, DS, H-Types, Visa and at least one LNA, which I didn´t see on the road for a very long time. And of course all possible 2CV ages and variations, many original and of course a lot of hommade "customs", came to the meeting. Lots of Charlestons, Dollys, a "007-Special", Mehari, Pony, Burton, Lomax, Sahara 4x4, Pickup-Trucks, Hoffmann-Cabrios and even an electric 2CV. The only version I hoped to see, but couldn´t spot was the Bijou. As I had such a wonderful afternoon, I did of course not regret the interruption of the pottering on my Benz, especially after I heard the voice of its engine for the first time since twelve years on Sunday evening.
