Volkswagens for rallying across Africa

Reader Andre sent in another lovely period photograph from Africa. He adds: "The Bulawayo Volkswagen Team ready for the grueling Dunlop Central African Rally of 1964, which was held anually over the Easter weekend in (Southern) Rhodesia, at the same time as the East African Safari Rally. From left to right a 1962 model, with John Wright and Bill Morgan, a 1955 oval window model, unfortunately I don't remember who the crew members were and a 1953 split window model, crewed by husband and wife team Mike and Jackie Rademeyer. Jackie was the sister of six times World Motorcycle Racing Champion, Jim Redman. Mike also prepared all the cars."

We would love to learn a bit more about this daunting rally team and their cars and did a quick google search, which soon lead to this fascinating website. When you take a little time to scroll the many photographs on there, you will be amazed how many people rallied VWs throughout the world. The Zimbabweans of Andres photo, however, do not seem to be included there? Perhaps you have some more information hidden in a drawer, or in a part of your brain that hasn't been used for some time..? Feel free to drop us a line below.
