On July 25th 1956 the Italian passenger ship S.S. Andrea Doria sank near the American coast of Massachusetts after a collision with a Swedish ship. In its hold were several cars, among them a Chrysler concept car, the Norseman. There were also several Lancia's , probably B24 Aurelia convertibles that were ordered by Max Hofman, the US Lancia importer. Now here the problems starts. Some sources say there were fifty Lancia's on board (Wikipedia), but there's also a book by Melvin Maddocks , titled 'The Great Liners' that says there were only nine Lancia's in the hold and the rest other makes. The Andrea Doria is accessible for very experienced divers and many artifacts have already been recovered, but what about the automobiles? Some say that several of them have been salvaged from the wreck and have been restored. Could this be true? Or are all the automobiles still in the hold? And if so, how many are there? Who can tell?
