Since the first time we saw a Triumph 1800/200 Roadster in reality it caused mixed feelings. The over heavy shape looks like an inflated model car. More cartoonesque than about anything else on wheels as if escaped from a Disney movie. Without knowing too many details about the tuned 1800 Standard or the 2000 Vangard engines they both seem falling short terribly to move the big blob. And still, still... we're always attracted to the car whenever we see one.
Like this perfectly unrestored example that was seen at Beaulieu last September. Towed away by a Swiss restoration company, we wonder what happened to her. Is it recommisioned in a symphatetic way? Or was it torn to pieces in order to become a concours lawn mower within a couple of years? We suddenly understand our emotion with Triumph's early postwar Roadster. It's a big clumsy dog. It will ruin your carpets. Drewl on new shoed. Will fart every 10 minutes. Cost a fortune on food and vets. But it's so heart breaking sweet and sympathetic that no one should use one single wrong word about her.
