Winning Indy 500 car for your garage?

It must be pretty tiring being a collector of open wheel racing cars these days. The good cars cost big money now so insuring them isn't cheap. They can't really be driven on the street, and after the early '70s or so, just starting one requires a crew and a checklist (and usually special fuel and oil). Then there's the matter of tires, both locating the proper ones and affording them. And if something breaks or wears out, making a new part is often the viable, if not the only, option. Suffice it to say that, besides the necessary deep pockets, open wheel racing car ownership requires levels of persistence and focus not needed by guys lusting after '55 Chevys.

The flip side of the coin is that, almost without exception, owners of important racing cars with provenance almost never regard them simply as show cars, or even investments, but as genuine relics of history entrusted to their stewardship for preservation.

Anyone wishing to join the exclusive fraternity described above is advised to take a look at Lot 241 in RM Auctions' upcoming sale in Monterey, California, on August 16-17, 2013: the 1974 McLaren M16C Indy Car that Johnny Rutherford hustled from 25th on the starting grid to victory circle on May 26, 1974.

If you've always wanted to own an Indy 500 winning car, don't get outbid for this 800 HP missile, which is one of only a handful of pre-IRL Indy 500 winners that remains in private hands.
