It seems that obscure American makes are finally getting the attention they deserve, not in the last place because of Geoff Hacker’s great sleuthing work at Forgotten Fiberglass. At Worldwide Auctioneers ‘The Auburn Action’ on September 1, two of these cars got squeezed in between all the big American names. The Woodill Wildfire (300 sold, most as a kit) is probably the best known of the two. This car is a late Series 2 with Ford Flathead V8 and lots of rare tuning goodies and is in an absolute pristine condition. In fact it’s still wearing its original paint with only 1,602 miles on the clock. But sit down for this one: the estimate is set at $110,000-$140,000. That’s appreciation! That rarer does not automatically mean more expensive is proven by the other car: a 1955 Californian Sports Special that, according to the auction house is unique. Well… Geoff Hacker knows of at least one more example, but fact remains that you’ll have fun stumping your friends trying to identify it. It uses a Mercury sourced flathead V8 with Offenhauser speed equipment. With a $50,000-$60,000 estimate it’s still not cheap but then it is believed to have some racing history…
