Worlds apart Down Under

When there’s something classics going on in Australia we expect to see at least a few Holdens. And the auctioneers of Theodore Bruce do not let us down. On Saturday, during their Motorclassica Show sale in Melbourne they offer two, which couldn’t be more apart. First of them is a 1965 HD Station Wagon (above) with space for at least six – plus all their luggage. The car had just one previous owner from new, who ordered it with extras such as a hand brake warning light, high note horn, mud flaps, hood ornament and ‘screen clean’ windshield. It’s in a remarkably authentic condition with first paint, original factory interior, engine and wheels plus a comprehensive documentation.

All quite the opposite of the other Holden, which Bruce has on offer: a 1953 ‘MM’ Special of which ‘MM’ stands for Molina/Massola – creators Lou Molina and Sylvio Massola, who also used bits from Standard and HRG to build it. To many a surprise the car – hardly run in - came fifth in the 1953 Australian Grand Prix when it managed to beat a string of brand new Healey 100s and Jaguar XK120s, big Allards and Maseratis plus the fierceful Maybach Special of Stan Jones. The car was continuously campaigned in Australia and New Zealand until it caught fire in 1963, which destroyed it. So the car on sale is a faithful recreation built in the 1990s with help from Sylvio Massola and the Molinas. As good as it gets? We think so. Why not take both and use the Wagon as a tow car for the Special..?
