Designed to wander far beyond the map’s edges, the Land Rover Series III has become an icon of exploration and endurance. From African savannas to remote mountain passes, the Series III—and particularly the rugged 109-inch wheelbase models—embodied Land Rover’s mission to go anywhere, carry everything, and do so with unshakable determination.
This 1977 Land Rover Series III 109 Restomod pays homage to that legacy while elevating the model into a new echelon of refinement and usability. Originally one of the marque’s most utilitarian 3/4-ton pickup configurations, it has been the subject of a no-expense-spared, “open checkbook” restoration carried out between 2019 and 2024 by the highly regarded artisans at Kevin Kay Restorations of Redding, California.
Accompanying invoices document an investment exceeding $460,000, with nearly every component of the vehicle systematically renewed or reengineered. The project started with a completely custom-built chassis that was hot-galvanized and powder-coated before being equipped with an Intelliride air suspension system capable of actively managing ride height and stiffness. Braking was enhanced via upgraded power disc brakes, while Defender-spec doors, axles, and a single-pane windscreen, together with power steering and a revised steering column arrangement, combine to deliver exceptional maneuverability. A modern Cummins R2.8-liter turbo diesel engine paired with a contemporary five-speed manual transmission headline the build and transform the traditional Series III driving experience into one far better suited for everyday usability.
Finished in an elegant Sea Grass exterior, the body retains the unmistakable upright silhouette and purposeful stance of the original, while the cabin has been thoughtfully reimagined with rich Connolly Vaumol Saddle Tan leather upholstery (using several hides selected for the finest grain and finish), a wood-rimmed steering wheel, air conditioning, and a Land Rover-branded retro-modern navigational sound system.
The result is a beautifully executed evolution of the classic Series III: A vehicle that honors its utilitarian roots while delivering the refinement and capability expected of a modern luxury touring machine. To view this car and others currently consigned to this auction, please visit the RM website at
