Released in 1966, the Aston Martin DB6 Volante proudly followed its celebrated predecessor as the perfect convertible tourer for four. Queen Elizabeth II gifted one to her son Prince Charles on his 21st birthday in 1969, perhaps the ultimate endorsement of the model.

This fascinating example, completed in May 1967, was delivered new to John “Jack” Dorrance Jr. of Gladwyne, Pennsylvania, former chairman of the Campbell Soup Company and son of condensed-soup inventor Dr. John T. Dorrance, who previously ran the company. It was delivered through Keenen Motors, Inc. in Doylestown, Pennsylvania, on 30 August 1967 along with another DB6 Volante, chassis 3644—the two presumably driven by Dorrance Jr. and his wife. Chassis 3623 was originally finished in Platinum with a Black interior and top—a nice match to the triple-black 3644—and came equipped with a Borg Warner automatic transmission, Coolair air conditioning, engine breather system, power steering, chrome wheels, three-ear hubcaps, Fiamm horns, Bosh Koln TR radio, power antenna, Britax safety belts, bumper overriders, and Avon Turbospeed whitewall tires.

By the 1990s, the DB6 was with Aston Martin collector Anthony Moody, who is said to have acquired it out of Philadelphia, reportedly having the automatic transmission replaced with a ZF five-speed manual gearbox and the exterior refinished in black, before shipping it to the United Kingdom. Mr. Moody would later commission Aston Martin specialist RS Williams to perform a mechanical overhaul, said to have included upgrading the numbers-matching engine to 4.2-liter specification. He enjoyed the DB6 Volante on vintage rallies, including the Rallye du Maroc in 2003, Rallye de Slovenie, and the Rallye des Alpes.

The DB6’s next owner acquired it from Mr. Moody through RS Williams in 2004 and commissioned Aston Martin Works to refurbish it in 2007, requesting the car be refinished in its current colors of Dubonnet Red over Oxblood leather. To provide a more refined driving experience, a modern four-speed automatic transmission was fitted—replete with the original gear selector—along with electric power steering, Koni adjustable shocks, bespoke air conditioning, and a Blaupunkt stereo with satellite navigation.

The current owner acquired the DB6 Volante out of the United Kingdom in 2020 and commissioned noted specialists Classic Motor Cars of Shropshire to mechanically and cosmetically refurbish it. The work included repairing a dent on the front valance and removing the non-standard third brake light, electric side mirrors, and electrochromic rearview mirror installed by a previous owner, replacing them with factory-style units. Classic Motor Cars also replaced the tires, door glass, and battery, and refurbished the carburetor and driver’s seat, among other assorted repairs.

With the car back in the United States, the choke and idle speed were adjusted and the reserve tank overhauled in January 2021. The current owner drove the DB6 on the Copperstate 1000 vintage road rally across the Southwest in April 2024, and then on the 1,200-mile Going to the Sun Rally through the Pacific Northwest and Northern Rockies in September 2024—impressive stints that attest to the British classic’s considerable capabilities. In October 2024, Classic Performance Restoration of Mesa, Arizona, serviced the differential, performed an oil change, replaced the water pump, alternator, fuel pump, fuel filter, fuel hoses, and the radiator hoses, fan, and shroud.
