The BMW Z3 Coupé 2.8 Automatic represents one of the marque’s most distinctive modern classics. Combining the long-bonnet proportions of the Z3 with the practicality and rigidity of the rare ‘shooting brake’ coupé body, the model has become increasingly sought-after by enthusiasts and collectors alike. Powered by BMW’s smooth and responsive 2.8 litre inline six-cylinder engine producing approximately 193bhp, this example is paired with a four-speed automatic transmission driving the rear wheels. Inside, the cabin features BMW’s driver-focused cockpit layout with supportive sports seating, clear instrumentation and practical luggage space beneath the rear hatch. The compact proportions, rear-wheel-drive balance and charismatic straight-six soundtrack combine to create a highly engaging modern classic experience. Increasing rarity, iconic styling and growing collector interest have established the Z3 Coupé as one of BMW’s most recognisable late-1990s performance cars. This 2.8 Automatic presents an excellent opportunity to acquire a usable and appreciating modern classic. The BMW Z3 Coupé 2.8 Automatic represents one of the marque’s most distinctive modern classics. This left hand drive BMW was first registered on 26th February 1999 and is an exceptionally rare BMW Z3 Coupé 2.8 Automatic, affectionately known amongst collectors as the ‘Bread Van’. Presented in outstanding condition throughout and finished in the highly desirable combination of Brilliant Silver metallic with contrasting black leather trim. Originally supplied new to Japan, the car remained there until its importation to the UK in November 2015. Benefitting from Japan’s favourable climate and careful ownership, the vehicle is notably corrosion-free and spent the first 16 years of its life within a private collection, during which time it was regularly maintained by BMW main dealers.
This BMW was first UK registered on 15th March 2016 showing approximately 51,000 miles (82,000 km) and has now covered just 69,000 miles (110,000 km) in total, meaning only 18,000 miles have been added during the past decade by enthusiast and collector owners.
Factory specification is exceptionally high, with the original options list detailing over 30 factory extras, including: automatic transmission, 18-inch multi-spoke sport alloy wheels, 25% limited-slip differential, front and side airbags, chrome line interior trim, green-tinted windscreen, sports leather seats, heated seats, headlamp washers, on-board computer, air conditioning, M Sport steering wheel, walnut wood centre console and battery master switch.
The history file is extensive and includes the original stamped service book, over 13 recorded services, original handbooks, spare keys, previous MoT test certificates, service invoices and parts receipts. Recent maintenance and improvement work carried out in the UK include new front and rear brake discs and pads and new Spax shock absorbers fitted all round. As a result, the car performs and handles exactly as intended.
Increasingly sought-after and produced in limited numbers, the Z3 Coupé has firmly established itself as a modern classic, with low-mileage, corrosion-free examples such as this becoming ever more difficult to source. An exceptional collector-quality example offered with comprehensive history and impressive provenance. Consigned by James Good
